HISTORY

History of the Morning Music Club (MMC)

The love of music inspired seven women musicians in January 1924 to form the Morning Music Club of Nyack, meeting and performing in spacious Nyack homes on Tuesday mornings. A chorus was quickly created and on April 24,1924, the “Chorale” and talented members performed in a public concert to a capacity audience.  Many successful concerts followed with various notable artists. This tradition continues today with Morning Music Club’s outstanding Concert Series engaging world-class and local artists. Our title dropped “of Nyack” since we embrace ALL of Rockland County free of charge!

An Outreach Program initiated in 1926, furnished a nurses’ room at Nyack Hospital, donated a piano to the First Reformed Church of Nyack and in 1943 provided USO programs for World War II servicemen at Camp Shanks in Orangeburg, NY. Recognizing the positive, therapeutic attributes of music, the tradition of Outreach thrives today with Morning Music Club (MMC) sponsoring over a dozen programs yearly for the young, the elderly and mentally and physically challenged.

Scholarships for Rockland County High School seniors intending to continue their music studies in college or conservatory began in 1950 with an award of $100 to the winner. Honoring this tradition, MMC has in recent years donated approximately $11,000 annually showcasing not one, but three, five or seven aspiring young musicians in an evening recital.

MMC was recognized in its 70th year with both the County Executive’s Arts Award and the County Legislature Award “for our significant contribution to the cultural and artistic life of the County”. This year MMC is being recognized by the Rockland County Executive’s Historic Preservation in celebration of our 95th anniversary.  Morning Music Club is indeed proud of its tradition of bringing fine music and the love of music into the lives of so many, as it continues to quietly lead the way as the oldest musical organization in Rockland County.

MMC is very grateful for your continued support.  Through the generosity of our members and the general public we are able to continue this wonderful tradition of providing annual Scholarship Awards.
